Rasheed Wallace to the San Antonio Spurs or the Boston Celtics?

nba_a_wallace2_395There are very few players in the NBA today as versitale as controversial forward Rasheed Wallace. Yes, Wallace may not be able to bring the ball up the court like say Lamar Odom or have the inside dominance of four time NBA champ Tim Duncan, but Wallace is easily one of the top ten forwards in the NBA and could turn a team like the Boston Celtics or the San Antonio Spurs into title contenders once again.

With Wallace’s ability to consistently shoot from outside and high basketball IQ he can play a vital part to any team that he might end up signing with this offseason.

In an effort to go through somewhat of a rebuilding process with younger players the Detroit Pistons have decided to pass on signing Rasheed Wallace, Allen Iverson and have even fired head coach Michael Curry. So with Detroit out of the question for Wallace as he goes through free agency there are plenty of title contenders knocking on his door with the San Antonio Spurs and the Boston Celtics strongly pursuing the forward.

The Boston Celtics were a great team last year with their big three intact and players Rajon Rondo coming into their own, but once Kevin Garnett went down for the postseason the Celtics struggled to even get to the second round against the Orlando Magic. With Wallace in the mix in Boston the Celtics will add yet another outside shooter and another good big man to play alongside KG.

The San Antonio Spurs on the other hand are trying to avoid trading away Manu Ginobili and keep their big three intact will adding key pieces around Tim Duncan while he is still in his prime. The Spurs made a major move recently by trading for small forward Richard Jefferson which makes the Spurs an offensive force in the West. With the addition of Wallace the Spurs will be able to challenge the Los Angeles Lakers who just recently adding another powerful piece to their puzzle by signing free agent Ron Artest.

So far it seems as though the Boston Celtics are the frontrunners to sign the forward. Last week the Celtics sent the big three (KG, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) along with Celtics GM Danny Ainge to talk to Wallace in person and express their interest in the big man. Unless the Spurs can top that I would say Wallace will be in a Boston Celtics uniform next season.

Even though the Spurs and the Celtics are the two teams expressing the most interest the Cleveland Cavaliers might also have an outside chance of signing him.

Where ever Wallace does land next season that fact of the matter is he has what it takes to turn a good team into a great team.
